The OpenEMI App Contest

EMI and the Echo Nest are throwing out the playbook and letting developers finally build and sell great music apps, without the licensing and negotiation nightmare. To kicks things into high gear, we're offering $5,000 to the developer that can build the best app from the music content and media assets available from killer artists like the Gorillaz, Evanescence, Pet Shop Boys and more.

Prize

The Grand Prize winner winner of the OpenEMI App Contest will receive a cash prize of $5,000. What's more you're in with a shot at partnering with EMI to help you bring your app to market, including a revenue share deal and with EMI taking on licensing and marketing.

Timeline

Applications must be submitted to The Echo Nest by 11:59PM EST on Monday, January, 16th, 2012.

Judging

We will evaluate entries based on their quality, innovation, use of OpenEMI content, and compelling user experience. All submissions will be judged by January 21, 2011. Final judging will be by a panel selected by EMI and The Echo Nest.

How to Enter
  1. Receive an Echo Nest API key from The Echo Nest by filling out the form at http://developer.echonest.com/account/register
  2. Request access to the OpenEMI Sandboxes you want to use for your app here: https://developer.echonest.com/account/sandboxes
  3. Create a working Software Application that utilizes the OpenEMI content
  4. Send an email to openemi-contest@echonest.com with the following information:
    • Title of your application
    • Name(s) and contact info of the program authors
    • The OpenEMI Sandbox used
    • One sentence description of the application
    • A detailed description of your application (300 words max)
    • Your Echo Nest API Key
    • A link to your application (if it is a web app)
    • A link to a video of your application (no longer than 5 minutes)
    • At least one and no more than 8 screenshots of your app

Entry email must be received by the Echo Nest no later than January 13th, 2012 at 6PM EST.

Rights and Permissions

By entering a Submission to the Competition, you agree to a) grant permission to EMI and the Echo Nest to post the Submission in all promotional material following the contest; and b) Make the application be reasonably available for public use for 6 months after the conclusion of the Competition Submission Period. Once a Contestant enters a Submission, the Submission cannot be modified in any way until after the Judging Period is complete. You retain all rights to your application.

Miscellaneous Rules
  • Echo Nest employees and their relatives are not eligible.
  • The winning team is responsible for dividing up the prize amongst the team members.
Judging Criteria

The Grand Prize will be awarded to the submission that best meets the following four criteria: (1) Quality of the Idea; (2) Innovation of the Idea (including creativity and originality); (3) Use of the OpenEMI Sandboxes and (4) User Experience of the Idea.

Winner Announcement

The winner will be announced on January 28th, 2012.
