I was wondering about the possibility of detecting the individual instruments (or at least types of instrument) playing within a track?
I mainly have been thinking about this because I've been trying various BPM detection tools out on my fairly large collection of swing/jazz/blues music... and the vast majority of the time it fails, even when there isn't a swung rhythm.
As a swing dancer (and starting to DJ a bit), I've been thinking about how my own brain finds the beat in jazz, and I'm pretty certain that I do it by picking out the instruments, and then focusing in on the lead instrument (which is often the bass, but could easily be the piano left hand, or, well, any instrument at all), then picking out the louder beat in that specific instrument.
If you just try to detect the beat in a lot of swing/jazz/blues music without picking out an instrument, it's very hard - there's often multiple competing rhythms going on between the different instruments.
